Thanksgiving in Ajo, Soon

Mom just informed me that she’d be more comfortable staying over at our house than in her own with the renter there. He shows up every November 1st or so and stays until May-something. He’s a real great guy, and this has been going on for, like, over ten years. But she doesn’t think she would be comfortable, and she’s not sure his ancient Chocolate Lab would get along with her Chihuahuas, and we know that my dogs get along just fine with hers, so OK, that’s fine, we’d love to have her.
I told her she’d have to sleep on the blow-up queen mattress in the other bedroom. It’s the least civilized bedroom, only because the linoleum tiles are half up and half down, and sticky in places. But we have a big blue rug we can throw down and a couple of little rugs, and she should be comfy.
So we are starting to make the list for the trip down. Home Depot, of course, will provide the bulk of our truckload, but then there’s the extra bed, bedding and rugs. I want to take the sewing machine and make drapes for the bedrooms, and sheers for the living room.
The list is getting long already, this far in advance. But we are going to have a great time. I think we will take a humongous pan of berry cobbler, or apple, or cherry … to the VFW hall for Thanksgiving. They are having the turkey and dressing and we are supposed to each bring a side dish.
So put one of those big aluminum pans on my list, and fruit filling.

Moving Day!

When we go down to Ajo this weekend, it will be to stay overnight.
That’s a big step ahead from where the house started.
We are taking beds and dog beds and dishes and dog dishes … a whole truck load.
We are in the process of prepping the floor for tile, we only have the one bedroom floor really cleaned, the one where we are sleeping. Soon we can put down tiles. Just not this time.
Dave’s going to work on the shower this time and I have painting and the kitchen cabinets to do. We’ll probably have to go to the VFW or Pugsie’s at some point.

Next time in Ajo,

I will get to the kitchen. The cabinets are great, just an ugly color, and the hardware is dirty and broken. We might be able to save some of the hardware, but I’m thinking it might be nice to just go ahead and get a whole new wet of plastic knobs that match. The cabinets will be dark mahogany, or something close to that. The walls will be (of course) peach.
I have used two five-gallon buckets of paint so far and am about half done with the main color (peach) on all the walls and woodwork. Next I will go over the window sills with a glossy peach, the same color, but tougher, then the dark color goes on one or two walls for contrast and the kitchen cabinets.

Pretty exciting.

Home from Ajo

When I came in the house it smelled just like home! We were only gone a few days, but there’s no place like home.
Look how comfy Hank the Cow Dog got on the way home. He for sure doesn’t need any roadside assistance, long as we keep rolling.

We got a lot done on the house this weekend. Here’s some pics.

I also painted a lot! I used most of a five-gallon bucket of peach. The house is looking great. look at these big windows with the peach walls.

Ajo, Arizona

We are going to Ajo this weekend. I have a huge bucket of peach paint. Everything will be peachy! (LOL)
After I paint every surface that light peach, I will come back and do some contrast in a dark barn red, oxblood, cinnamon coffee, something like that. I want to do one whole wall in the great room. That’s pretty funny to call it the ‘great room’, it’s such a small house, but there you have it.
I’ll bring back pics.

Next week in our Ajo house

I will also start prepping the wall for paint. I think I want to do a very light peach with dark barn-red for accent. We’ll have light-colored tile on all the floors.
We intend to have it totally done by Thanksgiving, and have the holiday celebration at our place.
The holiday invitations are already starting to be extended.
You can probably tell I’m pretty stoked about having this project house, it’s like ‘playing house’. It feels like a toy. It is a very small house, maybe that’s it.

Alone at Last!

My sweetie, my spice, my one and only, he’s gone off to motorcycle nirvana in LA. They (he and a fellow motorcycle-ophile) headed off this morning, and now that it is time for him to be home from work, it really feels like I’m alone. (Except for the five dogs).
It’s kind of nice, but I know I’ll like it only in small doses. He will be back tomorrow night, and next week we plan to go to Ajo and finish up the bathroom. So I’d better enjoy the solitude.
I have been looking for new sinks, found some fancy stone sinks, found some not so fancy. Mister wants a vanity in there, so maybe I will beg a new vanity for the ‘other’ bath and we can drag the old one down there.
I think we will be staying in the house sometime in October.

We closed on the Ajo house

and will go get the keys this weekend.
I’m pretty excited to be moving in my new house. Even if it is just a retirement house and a week-end getaway.
We don’t have any furniture to move in, so we won’t need any cross country movers, but we hope to get the utilities turned on Monday.
So much to do! We have to get the swamp cooler running first thing, and the other first thing is to get the dog fence installed.
The dogs really do love Ajo, they get to run in the wash all the time.

visiting AJO arizona

we had a great weekend, very quiet in the little town of Ajo, AZ.  We walked down to the new restaurant in town, a steak house, had a nice steak and then walked back to the local bar, Pugsies, had an Amber Bock on tap, at $1.25 per glass, it’s the best buy in town.

It was night, and the moon was full and it was so cool and nice, we strolled around a bit, looked at homes for sale.  Mom will probably need help eventually, she is making some pretty iffy decisions right now, financially speaking, and we are afraid she will lose everything and end up homeless.  Nothing I can do about it, but the worst case scenario is that we have to have a house in Ajo for her to live in.  So we’re looking.  She might be better than we think, but I doubt it.
