over there

a friend of ours is in either Iraq or Afghanistan and has been for some time. She might come home in January. She sent an email that I want to share with you.

This is Carol, Tony’s wife. How the heck are you? I’m sure that you have not received my “thank you” card. It doesn’t take long on our end to receive mail but sending mail to the US takes some time. I want to tell you “thank you” for the great care package. I ate up what I could and shared with the team. Seems I have been very blessed with the most generous friends. Our team has been snacking like queens and kings, LOL.
So how is life in Ajo? I checked out your blog. It’s way nicer than mine. I will have to add some photographs to my blog to spruce it up. Well, currently all blogs are blocked and I am surprised that I could actually open up your blog. Nice.
Still have all your doggies?
Well, my deployment is coming to an end, I have less than 90 days left on my contract. I am so ready to go home. I miss Tony, my daughters and all my friends. My first meal upon arrival will be pizza from Spinatos or Mellow Mushroom. I miss real pizza, mexican food, hamburgers, oh real food!
Just a short note to say Hi and Thank you!
Sincerely,
Carol

My advice to you, the reader, is to keep sending packages over and to count your blessing for living in this free country.

She’s done it again

Yoani Sanchez, with her book Havana Real and her blog GeneracionY.com has driven me to the fridge again. This time I thawed out the goat cheese stashed there for the delicacy of pasta salad with feta cheese and greek olives. I’m so ashamed. Not only am I endangering my diet, but by my not being able to do anything about the hunger of the Cubans I am fostering my own binge behavior.
I only took a few spoonfuls, but it is more cheese than she will get in a month, or maybe many months.
I am categorizing this entry with many food categories.

My Student loan is on the way

I forgot to tell you that the student loan is for sure going to be here the middle of September. Of course, I’m not naive, I’m not spending it yet. Chickens and hatches and all that, don’t ya know, but it will be nice to pay my daughter-in-law for this neat computer which is large enough to hold all the software I need for school. And an occasional tank of gas will be nice, too.
I found one of my books at half.com It was the fifty dollar one, and I got it for about $20.00. It hasn’t got here yet, seven days later, but I’m sure it will. They had two of the others for a good price, too, but I waited too long and didn’t have time to order and have them mailed. This Flash 8 animation class doesn’t get down to using the book for a couple more weeks, so I should be fine on that book.
I have one of the scholarship essays about ready to go and another in the works. I found these on fastweb.com and lots more. There are some that I am not remotely qualified to try for, but a few in my range. There are arts and essays both. You should go there if you’re in school. It’s free money!!! Boy I like free money. Even the chance of getting some thrills me.

PELL grant money!!

I got most of the tuition funded by PELL grant. YIPEE!! today i need to pop in to school and apply for a student loan (to add to my previous one hanging around from the stone-age) to make up the difference and to buy books. did most of the application process online, but need to sign some stuff.
i qualified for PELL because i made very little money last year as a temp for the title/escrow business…. tied directly to the housing market, which is pretty dead right now. really the only thing going on in title/escrow is foreclosures, but since all the title offices have consolidated and laid off, there won’t be much demand for temps these days. Alas, the heyday is over. predictions point to a two year recovery cycle and i just can’t wait that long for another paycheck.
luckily my monthly nut is small, I live with my gainfully employed homeowner main squeeze, my sweet little MIATA is paid for and insurance is low for an old geezer like me who drives like a granny. I did get two photo-radar speeding tickets last month on the 101 in Scottsdale, so we’ll see how much that jacks up the insurance.
I have to say, that Miata is a lot of fun, tho, i would recommend it for any commuter. Very reliable, great gas mileage and sweet in traffic. i get 27 to 30 mpg in town. on a trip i get like 34+. WOW
it kinda tires me out driving on long trips, though, a lot of steering and you feel the road. ‘course I’m like, OLD, but i absolutely LOVE it on the freeways and streets.
