Mad scientist

raspberry glaze

I mixed the raspberry glaze chemicals today. Tomorrow it will be nicely floculated, if I have that term right. I believe that floculation is the process of the powdered chemicals actually soaking up water. Although, it might be the opposite, the definition wasn’t clear and even when I talk to potters who know, it doesn’t seem clear, but it’s a great word.

Gifties

It is time to start thinking more specifically about Christmas gifts. I want Sammie to have a knife block this year. She has some really nice, sharp knives but they’re in a drawer, and I want them up on her counter-top.
So you know me, I have been shopping on-line. There’s all kind of options, from Martor USA utility knives to Ikea, and pre-shopping can narrow it down some. I actually am looking for something plastic and bright colored, but I might end up with a light-weight traditional wood block.
At any rate, shopping is fun!

Mold Making

Next step in making the skeleton feet is to make the ceramic press mold. To that end I have softened up some speckled buff, lined a suitably-sized box with plastic, layered a few inches of clay and left to settle.
After that I will press the sole of the skeleton/shoe model into the clay. I need to make the join right at the widest part of the foot/sole so the top part of the mold won’t get stuck and deform the mold when decanted.
I am gathering costumes and costume ideas, I think I will do a sports theme for some of them, I have been looking at personalized golf gifts online for accessory ideas and making jewelry out of beads and wire.
I’m pretty excited about this project, and we’re headed to Ajo tomorrow, I’ll get to look at my bones. I am very close to having all the parts for a test doll.

Birthday

My son’s birthday party was yesterday. I bought all-natural, grass-fed beef steaks (very expensive and tasty!), we had corn on the cob, baked potatoes, guacamole and chips, and two cakes.
My son’s neighbor, Chris, came, too, and he brought home-made chocolate covered strawberries. we had so much food that I forgot to set them out at dessert time!
We talked about a lot of interesting things, even rop life insurance, which some elderly people use for a little extra (and very needed) income.
I don’t know why I didn’t take any pictures. Why? So there’s no evidence.

whimsical

set of four

These will go on my new etsy account, with this description.
Ice Cream Dish
Pretty little stemmed ice cream cup. 3 3/4 inches tall and 3 3/4 inches wide. Blues and natural buff-colored clay support the whimsical design. This is a chunky, hand-made ceramic style and it holds temperature well, so you can freeze the cup and your ice cream will stay cold longer. Perfect for hot weather.
Microwave, freezer, and dishwasher safe.
I think $12.50 each or all four for $40.00

Art Books

Art books refresh my creative juices. I just finished The White Rabbit and Other Delights by Alan Bisbort.

Xmas Fun

Xmas Fun

What a long strange trip it’s been. I will give this book to my friend who is moving to Arkansas next week. We are getting together tomorrow for lunch and to say ‘goodbye’.
My friend is an artist. A REAL artist, and she will love this book. Even though she is younger than my son, she still finds the sixties art interesting and inspiring, and understands the philosophies involved with being a seeker and a slacker.
Don’t expect wedding invitations from her, she’s going to Arkansas to stay with her Dad for a surgical procedure. The reason she’s actually moving there, is because she wanted to move anyway and her lease is up, and it just seems like a good time.
I remember being that loosely tied, back in the sixties.

Summer Job?

ceramic plate

ceramic plate

This little plate is the best thing I have made so far in ceramics class. It is about 8 inches by 10 inches.
I signed up for the 3 credit Mata Ortiz ceramic class/trip. Mata Ortiz is about 100 miles south of New Mexico a little northeast of the Casa Grande ruins. I hope we get to go see them, the ruins, while we are there.
I will be back in early June and unemployed. I might take a Spanish class this summer, but that won’t take a lot of time and I have my eyes on the evening class anyway, I have heard good things about the teacher for that particular class.
I love sales, and have even thought of commission only sales for the summer, which is the easiest job to get in this economy. I looked here life insurance lead . Just not sure what I might find, but I AM half-way looking. I don’t want to work hard.
Paris came up with ‘posterior glaucoma unemployment’ which translates into ‘I can’t see my a55 getting a real job’. That’s me.
I also am looking into an internship with Shell. They are one of my most promising targets for Planet Cornucopia money, as they donate a lot and have a large non-profit unit. I would consider working in the non-profit part of Shell Oil, and an internship would be a great place to start.

Business cards

So I found some creamy-colored business card stock the other day that I liked real well, I wasn’t cheap, but what the heck. Now I need to design my own logo. I will probably break down and print some off with just my name and email and number if I don’t get off the stick and come up with something soon.
I have labels for my clothing and quilts, but the business cards will have to be different since I will use them for all things, not just the fabric-goods design line.
Once I get the logo, I can order all sorts of promotional products. Here is a good place to start looking. Things like cups, t-shirts, pens. I think a t-shirt would be cool with Stewart Creations on it. I can take the shirt apart and embellish it like I do with lace or ruffles or cut sleeves. Yeah, that would be cool. I have a t-shirt design I am working on that’s SOOO funky! I’m putting regular cloth gores in it from the empire line down to the hem for an all-over flare and leaving the seams all outside for that funky look. Then I cut down the neckband and sleeves for even more funk. We’ll see how it goes, I have one prototype that I’m not 100% happy with, but working on another. i sure like embellishing things!
