Mounted Prints

I have not been able to cut straight mattes, maybe I just have the wrong tool. My artist friend moved away and joined a petting zoo/ circus, otherwise I’d have her give me a lesson.
You’d think that would be appealing to someone young enough to need an acne products review contact, but no, she’s a mature and educated individual. While she’s nowhere near as mature as I am (counting years, not emotional … she’s as evolved a person emotionally as you could imagine, a very old soul), she’s not a callow youth.
So last term, I think I mentioned this, my theme in printmaking class was based on the photos she sent me of her animals. The ones she takes care of. She had big cats, but I never got a good print of big cat, I think because it freaked me out that she actually got in the cages with them. It was a different relationship with the other animals, and I got some good prints of them. Maybe I couldn’t relax around the pics of the cats.
I’m getting them ready to frame, and like I said, terrible at matte cutting (expensive mistakes, too), so I’m just mounting them on decorated boards for gifting. They can easily be removed for framing later.

More Fiction

I feel like I have to organize this fiction. Due to the nature of the blog, my entries are ‘newest first’ which is only right, for a blog. A story, though, should run ‘newest last’, so to speak, so these entries will be exactly backwards until I paste them together (if I ever do). so we will just have to read them backwards.
The pods that I mentioned below, the living quarters, are only as safe as the mechanics of it. If the equipment is in disrepair, you’ll get air leaks, water leaks, loose latches, rattles, loose electrical hook-ups, all the way from benign to dangerous.
When a pod unhooks, the space station automatically seals the opening, so if your coupling fails, you’re out in space with a temporary light plastic wall, assuming your fail-safe plastic wall is in working order. Rescue is pretty fast, but if your wall fails, it’s not fast enough.
Each pod has a sealed emergency booth that will sustain one or two people for an hour or so, if you have time to get there, usually a closet with urgent markings on the door. Lots of folks decorate it (even though you could get a fine, but the markings really are garish) but everyone knows pretty much where to expect an emergency booth in a pod or a hallway.
The station supplies some gravity, but expect your pod to have lots of handholds anyway.
Here is a model for a modest pod, the far side will hook to the station with or without additional living space. Choose from a wide variety of outer walls.

Medical Insurance

medical Insurance has been an itchy topic around here lately. The Mr. is no longer covered as of the end of June. He had carried the coverage for me and Sammie, too, so we’ll have to adjust. Sam is out of school now anyway, so can no longer be covered by her parents, and I just finished up my whole well=woman so I won’t need another for a few years. I can get my blood pressure meds in Mexico.
DearHeart, on the other hand needs coverage. He needs insurance to race. The guy has gotta race, you can’t stop him. So he’s gathering insurance quotes, I’ll let you know if he finds a real deal, we can’t be the only ones in this situation.

Push Start

One More Day to Retirement

Sweetie-pie is officially retired after tomorrow. YIPPEE!!!! Maybe we’ll celebrate with some new lingerie. Too much information? You gotta keep the fire stoked…’nuf said.
We are packing for the trip to Ajo, I think we might fry-daddy up a bunch of okra and shrimp for Saturday at Mom’s. You can see the fireworks great from her front yard, and the Ajo paper said they were letting off the fireworks on Saturday night so as not to bother the church-goers on Sunday night.
Last year remember the birds whooshing away from the dump as fast as they could go? We thought at the time they were buzzards, but now we are questioning that because there are so many ravens out there this year and not so many buzzards. So we’ll be paying attention this year.

Pod Dweller

I want to describe living conditions in space after it becomes routine. The family unit will be housed in a core section or room on the ship itself, and the separate bedroom suites will be detachable pods. Like travel trailers. The ship will be a city and the pods around the outside will be the suburbs.
The pods dock to the skin of the ship, there would be regulations about hook-ups, different priced locations, the right side of the tracks or sunny side of the street. Probably due to what is immediately inside or outside the ship at any given locale, but the outside view would pretty much be all the same, and the ship revolves.
You’d have outside scooters with minimal life support that you had to suit up to use, and fully equipped taxis and buses with standardized coupling to dock at your address or neighborhood. There were outside tubes maintained by the city for parks and bike paths.
Not much different than living in a big city, except it was expensive to leave, and a long trip to get anywhere.

people’s conversations

With our place in Ajo eating our spare time, ( I am NOT going to complain. We got the house so cheap. For example look in Outer banks foreclosures, and that’s what ours was, a foreclosure.
Back to the story….
Set-up:
Lonely in space, a loner teen keeps to himself, wires tri-vid gadgets, covers his room with screens, makes the room look immense, populates the immensity with animations.
This kid is listening to a conversation at the hot food lounge between two twenty-something ladies in electrician uniforms on lunch break. “……..but there’s a core of nice older women and a few young gals. Once in awhile a guy or two (young men) from a recovery program, once the sponsor guy came too with one of them.
There’s some sharing, but only if you want to… it’s pretty low key. it’s a real nice class and yoga has been sooo good for me, physically. ”

Swamp Coolers

Planning to go to Ajo the 1st or 2nd of July, the swamp cooler is a couple hours of my sweetie’s hard labor away from being operational, the furnace filters, or cooler filters or whatever they are, are the big thick cardboard expensive ones, and he will soak them in vinegar to try and save them. I am voting for … lets just change the holder apparatus so it will fit the cheapo filters that you can get anywhere, but that might be a time-consuming option that we don’t want to get into right away. Got to have our cool, and fast.

Annual Medical Checkup

Went in for my annual today. it was pretty painless. My cholesterol is a little high on the bad and a little low on the good, but if I eat more Cheerios and avocados I should be okay. I like the ‘eating more goodies’ thing.
So today I’m chillin’. Going to get some more prints matted. Won’t need safety glasses or anything, I’m using Elmer’s glue and shells, trinkets, etc, to make borders around the print holding cards. Very enjoyable craft.

My Poor Aching Back

My doctor is a young gal, and she doesn’t see any reason to get het up about aches and pains at my age, seems normal to her. Since my sweetie is retiring next week, our insurance through his work lapses, so I am getting the works. The future’s uncertain, is what Jim Morisson says, and the end is always near.
I feel fine except my back keeps going out. For over six months now I’ve had the same nagging burning sensation in my lower back. Off and on, but the last couple of days have been hard.
Sewing is my cure, so I’ll start something. Maybe infant halloween costumes, that would be a lot of fun.
I am looking at Mario patterns for a teenager’s quilt, and wouldn’t that make a fun costume? Mario?
Anyway, sewing is my go to thing when I can’t sit, since I stand to sew these days.

Birthday Party

My sweetie’s birthday bash was this weekend. We had a great time. We just stayed in and barbecued. I made a couple of cakes, one all chocolate and coconut (his fave) and a ‘not- chocolate’ for the people who can’t have chocolate. Some for the dogs that way, anyhow.

MMMM, Birthday Cake

My daughter in law is going to visit her sisters in New Mexico, one of them might go to medical assistant school, but no wait, she decided to stay home and be a mom to their three (so far) beautiful children. They are such good parents! We talked about that, Dave’s youngest child (the ASU graduate) came with her beau and we got to know him. Nice guy.
Oh yeah, I got to use some of the cute little cake pans I made in ceramics class. Sweet!

Looking For Work

Looking for work, but not too much work… LOL
I’m looking for some pretty low commitment income. I might post a looking for work ad in craigs list, hoping I don’t get too much grief from it.
I might have a pet-sitting 3 day job the first week of July, and I have a 10-day gig with the same pet and house later in the month. That’s some income. I really hate to even charge for these pets that are my friends, I love the little beasts so much, but when you’re broke you need to accept payment for services, otherwise the gods might think you want to work for free and will line up more free gigs. So you have to be careful about that.
Still need more income.

Designing Bags Again

I need a new yoga bag, I like the one I made for last term, but in using the bags, I always find something else I want the bag to do for me.
The yoga bag I am dreaming of will hold the yoga mat, a change of clothes, and a secure place for at least one class-worth of books and notebooks.
The bag I designed for last term just lets the books and clothes lay in the bottom of the bag and I don’t like them to get jumbled.
So back to the drawing board!
I think light colored canvas for this one with decorative top-stitching with my wonderful Brother machine and all its many stitches.

Print Making Class

I’ve got all these wonderful ink print sets from my printmaking class last term. Some I need to send to my pal, Liz, ’cause she inspired my petting zoo animal theme this term. Except for the last two, where I got random. Sort of exploring that old abstract thing in one of them.
So I am in need of some training or something on cutting matte board, and so have come up with a pretty good dodge. I am making backgrounds in prep for framing.
It’s a little complicated, because with a print you want to see the back, at least I do. But I think I have a good start.

Camel Moon

I loved working with the print press, but cannot think of a way to fit another term of it into my major.
My mad scientist mind is almost ready to do a print with my car’s tire as the press. I’m working on the wood and felt press, either sloped or thin enough to drive over without shifting the paper on the inked tile.

Star Crazy Quilt

Remember the three baby blankies I had going last term? I am just now packaging up the last of them, bound for New Mexico with my daughter-in-law.

Star Crazy

Look how puffy this one is, it got double batting. Mostly, Arizona quilts get single bat, but it gets cold out on the ranch during New Mexico winters. That baby is already walking! Just started.
My DIL will go visit after their anniversary, coming up this week. So I am loading her truck up with kid stuff, wish I could go, too, we don’t have any kids around here and I miss it.

organic burger

We had my kids and Sammie over last night for burgers. I bought some very expensive organic burger from Sunflower, my sweetie grilled them up and we had various breads and condiments with the burgers.
I have a theory that the processing methods of your every day American meat makes us humans more susceptible to minor and major illnesses. Hence the popularity of eczema treatment and obesity.
And I got to where I could smell the filth and the hormones (probably mostly in my head) and the offal in the meats. So I don’t eat too much meat these days. The organic burger was a real treat.

Firefly the series

I just finished my annual viewing of Firefly, Joss Whedan’s masterpiece (albeit short lived) series. I had some friends over off and on. There’s a surprising lot of my friends who are also Firefly junkies. What a great series!
I am tempted to turn around and watch it again, I really only have the chance to watch it in the summer, at least while I’m in school.
Wonder how many more years I will have the patience to stay in school?

tarot card-a-day

My new Herbal Tarot deck is so pretty! I’m glad I finally got it again. I’m (re-)learning the standard Waite layout with the standard cards. One of the sites I went on for information is Aeclectic Tarot and they suggested pulling one card a day to think about it and learn it all day. It can be a sort of direction or caution for your day.

Page of Cups

Today I pulled the Page of Cups, Reversed.
So I won’t be attempting anything rash today, my judgment might be a bit childish. Upright, this card is childlike delight with feet firmly on the ground, but reversed has a more frivolous and irresponsible nature.
Pages also indicate messages received and I have some important emails today that have a sensitivity about them. I will draft responses to my heart’s content, but am wary of sending any out today.
The herb connected with the Page of Cups is Damiana, I might order some.

etsy

I want to sell some things on etsy.com, the site that sells homemade and vintage stuff. I got my new herbal tarot cards and needed a bag, so I went ahead and made some extra bags, thinking I might sell them at the local new age shoppe, and I might yet, but thinking I could get to know etsy.com with these.
It’s not that I need them to list alli weight loss, but they want my credit card to ‘validate’ my account and THEN they will let me buy and sell using PayPal, which is the only way I will buy and sell online (at least so far). I don’t trust my only credit card number to the world wide web.
Can you blame me?

Stinking Hot

At over a hundred (between 105 and 112) in Ajo this weekend without a cooler, it was horrendous at Ajo this weekend. My sweetie is a real champ, and even though he worked both days and I sat with my feet in cold water, he didn’t complain once, but I finally lost it when we were packing up to go yesterday and haven’t quite got back my equilibrium.
I got hot enough to feel ill and could have used a term life insurance quote. It scared me, and the truck’s AC wasn’t working 100 per cent, too.
Pretty hot. And I was pretty mad, and still am a little cranky. Not at anybody in particular, but somehow angry all the same (and everybody pays).
Dang, I’m childish!

Tarot Card Bag

Card Bag

This pretty little bag is just a bit long for my new Herbal Tarot deck, but so silky. I need to make another. This went together really fast and it is so much fun to add the pretties.
I am boning up on the Tarot, it’s been a long time. I am not exactly the age to want acne face wash here but there’s nothing wrong with an experienced reader.
I have an opportunity to read cards for a shop that my neighbor works at.
So we’ll see. I like the bag, and I might make some more and see if I can sell them.
What fun!

Ajo Swamp Cooler

We are going over to Ajo Friday night. We are almost ready for another section of flooring. It’s not time to shop for rugs yet, but I can see it from here.
Darling’s first project will be getting the swamp cooler running. He built one out of this and that and other parts, and fixed and sealed and drilled and bolted, and we lifted it up onto its stand last time with the help of a neighbor.
He needs to wire it in this time. We might have to stay at Mom’s if it’s too hot a night on Friday. but maybe a fan will suffice.
