The NPR interview with Patti Smith

WOW, great interview! I just realized that I don’t own a single thing of hers, good thing I have Pandora Radio.
Xtina and I shopped all morning at the post-Christmas discounts, we had a ball. I spent about $6.00, but the shopping was really the main goal.
She has a job in the medical industry and gets really great health insurance lead
My own is changing all the rules with this new plan going in across the country. We’ll see how that shakes up, but imagine my surprise to hear that the basic plan I have is considered one of the ‘Cadillac’ plans. Guess we’re some of those fat cats you hear about. Huh. Go figure.

Used Books

I can sell my school books when the bookstore opens next week. That should give my bank account a boost. Yeah, I’m still brooding about my financial troubles. Not that it’s a surprise, but I can’t believe I didn’t actually find employment by now, knowing this time would come. It comes every year, it should’nt be a surprise.
Well I have a plan or two and something will work out, it always does. Only six more weeks until my next batch of school money get here. The Honors money will be here before that. Sweet, sweet Honors $$$!!

Dogs on the Mountain

Humboldt Mountain

The air was crisp, the wind was brisk on the hilltops, and the sun was warm.
We took a picnic made from left-over Christmas feast and spent the day. We had so much fun and found so many good rocks that I didn’t even have time to read the book I brought. Dave got a nap on a rock.
It’s been a really long time since we got out in the boonies like that. The dogs loved it.
They were so tired out that we didn’t get any noise out of them till the next day. Quiet, well-behaved dogs are not easy to achieve, but we did it that day.

Student Money Blues

Well, I finally got around to looking at my balance. Damn! Where’d all that money go?
So I took my jar of coins to the coin machine and scraped through the other little accounts and scrounged through my purse for a deposit that might make it. A bounce costs $30.00, OUCH.
I need a job. I really would like a healthcare job search place or an agency that would hire me for when I’m broke and not in school. Would that ever happen?
Meantime, we are babysitting our beautiful Boyd-Lur. I am in love with his grace and cuteness all over again.

Cleaning the Ceramics Studio

Another term done, today we go through all the miscellaneous leftover projects. Some of the pottery is pretty nice, but goes unclaimed for various reasons. It’s kind of like colon cleanse reviews

A lot of the pieces I can identify from the signature, and some are just at a phase where they can’t be taken home right now but the artist will be back in January to finish them. I know I have a couple of pieces on the racks in various stages of completion.

Fall 09 Honors Project

Now that I’m done with this term, I have all the work done for my non-profit IRS status. I will be posting some of the info here, but more can be found at PlanetCornucopia.com

Starting a Nonprofit Organization

Perhaps the best way to really clarify to yourself what you intend to accomplish by starting a new nonprofit is to write a basic mission statement for your organization. You’ll soon need this mission statement anyway if you plan to incorporate your nonprofit (more about incorporation a little later on). The following guidelines may be helpful to you when writing your first, basic mission statement.
At is most basic, the mission statement describes the overall purpose of the organization. It addresses the question “Why does the organization exist?”
Try include a description of what you think will be the new nonprofit’s
a) primary benefits and services to clients
b) groups of clients who will benefit from those services
c) values that will guide how your nonprofit will operate
d) how you’d like others to view your nonprofit

The phrase “starting a nonprofit” can mean several things:
* You can be a nonprofit organization just by getting together with some friends, eg, to form a self-help group. In this case, you’re an informal nonprofit organization.

* You can incorporate your nonprofit so it exists as a separate legal organization in order to a) own its own property and its own bank account; b) ensure that the nonprofit can continue on its own (even after you’re gone); and c) protect yourself personally from liability from operations of the nonprofit. You incorporate your nonprofit by filing articles of incorporation (or other charter documents) with the appropriate local state office. (An incorporated nonprofit requires a board of directors.)

* If you want your nonprofit (and if you think your nonprofit deserves) to be exempt from federal taxes (and maybe some other taxes, too), you should file with the IRS to be a “tax-exempt” organization. (The IRS states that you must be a corporation, community chest, fund, or foundation to receive tax-exempt status. Articles of association may also be used in place of incorporation.) (Probably the most well known type of nonprofit is a the IRS classification of 501(c)(3), a “charitable nonprofit’.) Depending on the nature of your organization, you may also granted tax-deductible status from the IRS. So, for example, you could start a nonprofit that is incorporated, tax-exempt and eligible to receive tax deductible donations.

If unable to file for corporation or for federal tax-exempt status, there are other ways to act as a non-profit. Consider Fiscal Sponsorship to jump start your organization. In some cases, you might find and work with another nonprofit organization that will act as your fiscal sponsor. A fiscal sponsor might be useful to you if your nonprofit:
1) Does not have sufficient resources to handle startup costs and fees
2) Does not have sufficient skills initially to manage your finances
3) Will address a community need and then no longer need to exist.

You can do much of the work yourself to get incorporated and/or tax-exemption and/or tax-deductibility, but you should have some basic guidance and advice from a lawyer who understands nonprofit matters.

According to a very informative paper by Eve Rose Borenstein, Copyright, 1998

http://www.managementhelp.org/legal/lgl_need.htm

When an entity operates, regardless of its public benefit or social welfare purpose, it will find itself subject to two legal realities: first, that the entity itself (separate from the individuals operating same can be sued for actions taken in its name or under its sponsorship; and second, that when an entity conducts financial activities, it will be considered a “taxpayer” under federal and State statutes.

Many types of tax-exempt status are possible but by far the largest category available is the “charity” category defined by Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3). Groups recognized as operated for charitable purposes, via a 501(c)(3) exemption letter, are the only type of tax-exempt entity which is across the board able to receive donations which are tax-deductible to the donor.

Mexican Insurance

for just one day it won’t be expensive, so that’s within my budget. Actually you can shop around for an insurance quote, but I find that any one of the agencies in Ajo, Arizona is just about the same as any other one.
You really should have insurance when you cross our southern border, not only is it a law (Mexican) but it’s also a good idea.
I might stop by that new dentist and see what her rates are, I’ll let you know.

Trip to Ajo

I’ll take the two little dogs and stay over at Ajo so I can make a day trip into Rocky Point and deliver gifts.
I’d stay over at Rocky Point, but don’t really have a place to stay right now. Don’t want to rent a motel, but it’s only a couple of hours from Ajo, not a bad drive.
It’s cold, around forty degrees in the morning. Not weather for equestrian apparel unless you wear a coat, but still warmer than the rest of the country. I suppose that when I’m at Mary’s I’ll have to drink a beer with her, that might warm me up a little. But thinking about that drive back to Ajo it won’t be more than just one beer.
I’ll get to see that little Tomato dog! She is such a cutie.

Xmas shopping

Today is the day I will go out and get the Mexico-bound gifts.
Mary will get a new flannel nightie, Lydia a scarf, and Mom, who knows? I have no idea what to get her. Maybe just money, that’s always the right color.
Paris and Heather are hard to buy for this year, too, they seem to have everything they need. Within my price range, anyway.
Dave takes care of the girls’ gifts, and most of my personal friends will be getting ceramics. Hear that? Ceramics! Now you know what you’re getting.
My niece, JJ and her kids’ presents will have to get mailed off soon, but I’m not sure what part of the country they are in right now.
So I’m off to the store today. I have one more class tonight and then I’m all done with this term.
And this year, basically.

Last day of class in Ceramics

Well school is out, so now it’s time for me to find a vacation home, maybe look at orlando vacation homes. That would be fun.
Tuesday we have our ‘show’, where we each take four of our favorite pieces in and tell the class about them, and why they are the favorite.
I’m going to take home made fig bar cookies, it’s kind of traditional.
We did RAKU last time, yesterday, and my fish with the white crackle turned out really cool, the black heart not so much.

I really enjoy ceramics and will take it next erm for sure.

Yard sale-ing

We are going to get some yard sale goodies tomorrow! I swear, my friend that’s visiting can find the BEST deals.

pink glass

I was with her one day and saw this broom doll, she knew what it was, I didn’t, but I got it for twenty-five cents and turned around and sold it on ebay for $45.00 !!!!
So if you ask me, the most unique gifts for her
will probably be found at a yard sale with a little bit of luck.

Old Friends

Our friends from Minnesota are here! We’re already excited and have eaten too much. We had to have snackies to sit down and talk, well we visited for an hour or more, snacking all the time. Guacamole and chips, date bars, cashews, chocolate-covered pretzels, grapes, apples and cheese. Boy did we pig out!
The boys are out looking at the trucks, one has a dead battery and they are discussing a possible short in a wire on the other one. Real guy stuff.
Us gals are in the kitchen, drinking tea, cooking dinner and catching up. I can’t believe it’s been three years since we last saw each other, seems like yesterday.

More Pottery

ceramics is great fun

ceramics is great fun

So that’s my final paper, the one about Leanne Ash, potter from North Carolina. She does interesting things with EnergyXchange in harvesting landfill gases for firing her kiln.
This week end some friends of ours are coming up from their vacation in Puerto Vallarta. They have time-share condos and they HAVE to take a vacation every year or so to use their benefit. It’s a really great way to make sure you get a vacation.
Instead of myrtle beach vacation rentals, though, this is Mexico.
Still, pretty neat way to go.
We went with them one year and had a blast.

Ceramic Jewelry

Next term in ceramics, I really want to make some jewelry. Some beads or something. might be like a Diamond Initial Pendant or something. That seems very do-able. I researched an article on a potter whom I admire greatly for ceramics this term. Go to my paper on http://ceramics.stewartcreations.com/?p=89 to see it. She does marvelous things with slip and majollica. I got into majollica in a big way this term, and while I made mostly functional things, I think funky, earthy jewelry is in my future.

Final Papers at School

This is the last week of school this term. After I am done here, the first thing I intend to do is read some non-fiction books.
I read a book along the Ajo Thanksgiving trip by Carl Hiassen. He is such a good read. I didn’t enjoy it as much as I might have because I felt guilty about taking the time out, but it was really good anyway. He always makes me laugh out loud. Gave that book to Mom; she likes him, too.

This mud hut is next to the donut shop (the Roadrunner) in Ajo. Ocatillo ribs and mud.

Finals Week

I am SOOO on top of it this term, kinda makes me wonder what I’m missing. Did I forget to do a project? Nah, I’m just good.
I never did get around to buying that laptop, and now I am shopping for desktop computers anyway.
I had wanted the laptop for doing homework while we were in Ajo fixing the house, figuring I would never keep up if I didn’t stay hooked to a keyboard.
But look at how good I am. I have only two papers due, having already gotten A’s on the two projects and papers I already turned in, and these two papers are actually almost finished. Just need to organize them and print them. Most of the ceramics and planetcornucopia.com papers are already on their respective web sites.
